Pokémon Fire Red has never been released on Nintendo’s Virtual Console, but there are still options for playing the game beyond the Game Boy Advance and emulators: Minecraft.

A user named Reqaug used structure blocks, which were introduced in version 1.10 of Minecraft and were designed for map creators, to make a replica of a Game Boy Advance that plays Pokémon Fire Red with surprising accuracy and functionality. There’s a lot that’s still missing from this remake, like dialogue and the battle system, but it appears you are currently able to at least walk around the map and enter buildings. The visuals are a bit choppy when moving around and do take a bit of time, removing most of the game’s fluidity, so don’t expect any fast-paced titles to be successfully emulated in Minecraft any time soon.

Still, it’s impressive, and a work in progress. Requag said that the project took him about three weeks to make, working two or three hours a day, so about 50 hours total, give or take. The recreation does go places and do things that the original game does not, though: It includes a built-in level editor, and it allows you to re-texture the game to look like the original Game Boy version of Pokémon Red and Blue.

This project is just the latest testament to how impressive a sandbox environment Minecraft can be: Somebody else is working on remaking the original Pokémon Red, while another ambitious player made a functional, full-size replica of The Legend of Zelda.
