SNL Skewers STAR WARS Fans Who Leave Toys in the Box

I’m going to try and write this without being completely hurt that SNL hit the nail on the head about thirty-somethings and their (my) obsession with collecting Star Wars things.

In something that probably needed to be said about the state of super-fandom, SNL started the commercial as a normal toy ad with kids playing with Star Wars toys – which is exactly what should be done with toys. The joyful children are soon interrupted by older fans played by Kyle Mooney, Bobby Moynihan, and Taran Killam who are all too-serious adult collectors of SW things.

Despite this sort of thing happening when the prequels came out, perhaps now more than ever is adult super-fandom an actual thing. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming out in a time where it’s never been more acceptable – or encouraged – to let your nerd flag fly. Not that being a super nerd is a bad thing. My job is predicated on such things and the cast of SNL are probably nerds about at least other comedy and there are people like Stephen Colbert who is unabashedly proud of his Tolkien expertise. The sketch itself – for me at least – is a glimpse into the nerd hoarders we could potentially become. The gents in the ad are meant to be at The 40-Year-Old Virgin level of obsessive collecting and we can probably all agree that it’s mostly an extreme example where we may know only a handful of people where this sketch is an accurate mirror.

Ironically, where the sketch is astutely making fun of the kind of person I sometimes can be, it really only resulted in me looking online for more toys to collect and feed my habit. What manner of beast is thirty-something-year-old-nerd-man, amiright?

What’d you think of the sketch? We’d guess if you hated it, you might be its subject matter. Let us know how mad it made you in the comments below!
