SNL Sketch ‘Uber For Jen’ is an Adventure of the Absurd

What do they say about the journey being more important than the destination?

It might be frustrating when your taxi or Uber driver doesn’t seem all that interested in actually getting you where you want to go in a timely manner, but can you really put a price tag or a time limit on something much more important–a life experience?

On this week’s Saturday Night Live, host Elizabeth Banks joined Mike O’Brien in a very funny taped sketch titled “Uber for Jen.”

What starts out as a simple premise, one where your Uber driver doesn’t follow your directions, and then compounds his mistake by continuing to ignore you, becomes an adventure of the surreal, one that leads to the special bonding of strangers.

Oh, and also the birth of a child and the killing of a man. Circle of life, man, circle of life.

For all of the absurdity of the sketch (an absolute staple of a Mike O’Brien taped piece), the real killer joke comes when he rates his Jen on the app.

You might recognize Mike O’Brien because he joined the cast for one season before returning to the writer’s room, but he still pops up in these taped pieces from time to time.

Do you have any good Uber stories? I recently learned the life story of a Russian immigrant that was one of the more delightful conversations I’ve had in awhile. Tell us about your best or worst Uber experience in the comments below.
