Apparently the last vestiges of âAll-Starâ have finally fizzled into oblivion. Smash Mouth, whose legacy will be forever wrapped in that 1999 smash hit (and Shrek, I guess), have moved onto… EDM.
With the help of DJ Specter, Smash Mouth have crafted a bulging EDM track called, âLove is a Soldier,â as Entertainment Weekly reports. And aside from frontman Steve Harwellâs familiar vocal, it sounds like most of the EDM songs youâve been hearing (or not hearing) for the past decade. Thereâs the seemingly requisite female vocal oohing and aahing, the predictable beat-drop, and lyrics like, âI wanna know / You gonna throw down / You wanna feel / You ready for the showdown,â and, âLove is a solider / Sex is a gun / Youâre ammunition.â
We here at Nerdist donât like to be too critical because art is powerful, and typically itâs a heartfelt expression of someoneâs thoughts and perspectives. That said, câmonnn Smash Mouth. Iâm not even going to touch the fact that youâre equating love and sex to violence (which alone is worth an entire article or three), but this could be an ironic 2005 Avicii remix of a Smash Mouth song that was panned for, again, equating love to violence.
This song marks the first time Smash Mouth has been in the news since Harwell threatened to âbeat the f*ckâ out of whoever was throwing bread at him at last yearâs Fort Collins festival in Colorado.
Like them or hate them, itâs hard not to be perversely intrigued by what theyâre going to do next. How do you feel about this bizarre bit of news? Let us know in the comments.
