How to Make Hot Cocoa Worthy of Ned Flanders in THE SIMPSONS MOVIE

Good ol’ Ned Flanders. The guy who lives next door to the Simpsons may be irritatingly upbeat at all times, and have deliberately limited tastes in food (plain white bread with a glass of water for dipping is literally the worst), entertainments, and just about everything else, really. But he abides by the central tenet of being a good neighbor and a good person of faith: be kind. And when the person you’re being kind to is an upset 10-year-old kid, chocolate is one of the best mood-improvers in your arsenal.

In The Simpsons Movie, Flanders makes Bart the most deluxe cup of cocoa you’ve ever seen, with chocolate shavings, whipped cream, Graham cracker, and a blowtorched marshmallow. But in setting out to copy this ultimate cuppa, chef Andrew Rea went even further. It’s not enough to get the toppings right; the first sip has to make you, like Bart, say “Oh my God!” in response.

At first, though, you might be tempted to say it as in, “Oh my God, you’re putting THAT in it? That’s not going to work.” Salt and instant coffee, for example, are among the secret ingredients. Yet the final product looks so great that we can suspend disbelief for real. This writer just might be too lazy to actually imitate the recipe, but be the Flanders you want to see in the world and try your hand at the amazing concoction.

And when you’re done, come back here and leave a comment saying how it was. We’ll wait.
