SHREK Is Getting Rebooted and the Internet is Not Happy

We doubt most people woke up today expecting to think about Shrek, but that’s only because no one thought they would awaken to the surprising news Universal Pictures plans to reboot the franchise with Illumination Entertainment head and Minions producer Chris Meledandri. It’s an announcement that sent the internet scurrying to their computers to express shock, skepticism, disgust, and, most importantly, jokes. But is there reason to think these reactions could end up making everyone look like donkeys?

On today’s Nerdist News, host Jessica Chobot looks at the unlikely report that Shrek and Puss in Boots are slated to return to theaters in the future with all new stories. Don’t freak out just yet though, because Universal and Meledandri are hoping to bring back the original cast. Whether that makes this a reboot or a relaunch is up for debate, but what’s not is how funny Twitter users were when they heard about the plans.

The most common complaints on election day have to do with long lines, voting machines not working right, and preferred candidates losing, so we have no idea if a bunch of people getting angry over the possible return of a successful kid’s cartoon is an upgrade or not. It’s not even like anyone has sincerely suggested a Shrek Cinematic Universe. Yet.

When that happens, we can definitely get angry. Either that or when we all have to hear Smash Mouth’s “All Star” on the radio again.

How did you react to this reboot report? Tell us in the comments section below how you feel about the return of Shrek.
