Showtime Renews PENNY DREADFUL for Season Three

Attention all Penny Dreadful fans, we have reason to celebrate, as Showtime has officially renewed the sumptuous gothic horror series for a third season, set to premiere sometime in 2016. Production is set to commence this fall in Dublin, Ireland, and all of the original cast, including Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, and Josh Hartnett are set to return, as well as series creator and showrunner John Logan.

In  a statement, Showtime president David Nevins said “John Logan’s brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fanbase into the meticulously crafted world of  Penny Dreadful. Together with our wonderful partners at Sky Atlantic, we’re excited to see what new haunts John and his team have in store for season three.” Next season will consist of nine episodes, one episode less than this year’s run, but one episode more than the first season (one suggestion to Showtime if we may be so bold: A Twin Peaks/Penny Dreadful back to back night would be everything. Just puttin’ it out there.)

Things on Penny Dreadful have definitely turned up a notch this year, with Eva Green’s character of Vanessa Ives being pursued by a coven of witches called the Nightcomers, who are maybe the most terrifying portrayal yet of Witches in modern horror. This season has also been making waves by adding the character of Angelique, a 19th century transgender person who gets caught up in the web of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney.) What might next season bring? Well, Dracula (or as he is referred to on the show, “the Master”) is still out there, waiting to make his appearance. Could he finally arrive next season? Time will tell. In the meantime, Penny Dreadful continues its second season on Showtime through July 5th.
