Exclusive: Titan’s THE ART AND MAKING OF PENNY DREADFUL Photos Are Horrifically Cool

Few shows on TV offers viewers imagery as lush as that of Penny Dreadful. Now in its second season (did you read our recap of the show’s season premiere?), John Logan and Sam Mendes’ horror drama has brought to life all the characters and tropes we love from Victorian fiction, complete with the kind of scale and sensibility that just hasn’t been possible on television before.

Titan Books clearly shares our enthusiasm for the show, for the UK publisher recently released The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful by author Sharon Gosling. Chock full of enough stills, concept and design work, and behind-the-scenes photos to satisfy the most rabid of fans, it’s billed as “the official companion book to the Showtime series.” Calling it a coffee table book doesn’t quite do it justice, so, at the risk of sounding pretentious, let’s just say it’s the kind of visual feast a show this gorgeous deserves.

Penny Dreadful

You can see for yourself what I’m talking about in the gallery below, in which we’ve got a dozen exclusive images from The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful, courtesy of Titan, for your viewing pleasure. They offer a revealing look at how the show’s wizards transform contemporary Dublin into a foggy Victorian London that’s straight out of the minds of Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde. There’s also a peek at star Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and Billie Piper on the show’s sets, and some shots of the makeup prosthetics work that will bring a smile to the face of most gorehounds.

Let us know what you think of Penny Dreadful, both the show and the new book, in the comments.
