After scaring us silly as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men and creeping us out as Silva in Skyfall, Javier Bardem is cutting quite the villainous swath across the silver screen as of late. The latest rumor swirling around is that Bardem might be hoisting the mainsail and taking to the seas as the main villain in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 opposite Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
According to Variety, Bardem is in line to play some sort of ghostly pirate. The studio was rumored to have previously been eying Jared Leto for the role, but those talks fell through when they shifted their focus to Bardem. The fifth entry in Disney’s Jerry Bruckheimer produced 3D money printer is already in pre-production in Australia where On Stranger Tides also shot. Directed by Kon Tiki duo Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, the five-quel is set to walk the plank to theaters everywhere in July 2017.
Sources say that production is set to begin in January and that they’re still looking to cast a handsome, probably pony-tailed young man to play opposite Depp in an Orlando Bloom-esque role. Might I suggest Orlando Bloom? Because unless they announce that they’re making 3 more Hobbit movies, I don’t think he’s got a heck of a whole lot on his plate.
