SHERLOCK Bosses Tease Dark Fourth Season

There hasn’t been a new episode since February, and we’re not expecting a new episode until next Christmas, but the rumor mill is already turning over season 4 of Sherlock. At the Emmys on Monday night, Sherlock bosses Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss teased the press with the following hints about the next season. We wonder if they’re not just trying to drive us mad in the interim between seasons.

“We have a plan to top it. And I do think our plan is devastating. We’ve practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan… we’re probably more excited that we’ve ever been about Sherlock,” Moffat told reporters asking if he thought the next season could beat season three’s epic run.

Gatiss chimed in later that night: “We’re going to try to take it somewhere we’ve never been before — and I don’t mean outer space. It will be challenging place to go. We always start with a re-introduction that builds toward a darker climax — we might just be going darker [from the outset]. We got a very, very good set of ideas.”

What could those clever Brits be planning for Sherlock audiences in season 4? Television adaptations of classic works like The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes run the risk of stagnating once the storied villains and plots have been exhausted, but the BBC’s adaptation has kept audiences guessing and engaged at every turn. And together Moffat and Gatiss have been boggling the minds of their fans for years both on Sherlock or Doctor Who. If they’re reducing Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to tears with mere ideas, we wonder if we’ll be standing in darkened alley, sneaking a smoke and swearing at their deviousness come 2015.

Or will it be more of a situation where Moffat and Gatiss will ask us if we feel better after we lose our cool and rant at them passionately in the middle of a Tube car rigged with explosives?

Regardless of the outcome, we cannot wait.

Sherlock was nominated for 12 Emmys this year and won 7 of them including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie (Benedict Cumberbatch), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie (Martin Freeman), and Outstanding Writing in a Miniseries or TV Movie (Steven Moffat).

  1. Jan Overeem says:

More moriarty! I know it must be hard to make his return believable, but that actor plays the part so amazing. Would love to see more of that.

  2. The way they tend to smoosh canon storylines together into one episode is telling. For example, what they did in s2 with A Scandal in Bohemia and The Illustrious Client. We will have to look at a possible mix of the Three Garridebs and even the Devil’s Foot, because both have very emotional connection scenes in canon between S&J. If tjlc is endgame, Mary will have to leave the canon to make way for a reboot of the adventures within the new relationship paradigm.

I suspect that Sherlock’s parents would be chuffed to bits with caring for a grandchild, so other than Mary’s loss and John’s close scrape with death in 3 Garridebs, and Sherlock’s in the Devil’s Foot, I don’t see things getting THAT dark especially as something tells me that BC’s Sherlock has incredible parenting potential. Remember that the biggest risks are out of the way: Milver-er, Magnussen, and Moriarty.

Although there’s also the possibility of Anderson going full metal Buddy, ie the Incredibles, due to his obsessive hero worship, and trying to top Moriarty in some psychotic fanboy fashion. I’d personally chalk up Moriarty’s “return” at the end of s3 as nothing more than Anderson and his hacker friends.
Lol.  I love this show.  We’ll see what actually happens.

  3. Ewa says:

At the very least, Mary and the baby will die. There is simply no place for a baby in this show and we all know what happens to Mary in the canon. However, this would make for a season of ugly crying and emo-Johnlock, so I’m kind of hoping for something more elaborate. Like, Mary is really evil and the baby is not John’s. Then they could still be devastated, but it would also push the show back on track with crime-solving and chasing the criminals, without having to sacrifice a whole episode for a funeral, the way they wasted one for the wedding.

  4. Bianca says:

    Give me Johnlock!!!!!!!!… and Moriarty!

  5. Laura Lovic-Lindsay says:

We take it for granted that Sherlock is “good.” What if Moffatt intends to play with that idea? Sherlock with no moral compass. He’s a high-functioning sociopath. He needs John to be his JiminyCricket conscience… Triumph of friendship?

  6. Amelie says:

Mary (and her Baby) or Molly will die caused somehow by Moriary. (Dear Moffat, please not Molly.)Irene comes back. Maybe she’ll die too. Everything is possible in Gatiss and Moffats dark Sherlock and Sherlock himself would be “free from distractions”.And there’s at least the possibility that Janines last name is Moriarty, brother dear. ;)I’m exited to see more of “Lord Moran”, burning London and things about Sherlock Holmes nobody has ever seen before. Thank you Steven Moffat for being a genious, you brilliant Bastard.
P.S.: Not Molly. o-o ohmygod it will happen! D:

  7. The 2.5th Doctor says:

    Here’s my theory.
Moriarty used the actor and the name of “Moriarty” as a way to protect his amenity. Why would a man of that intellect actually have interactions with his clients, even if indirect.
Moriarty is in fact Sherlock and Mycroft’s brother. They thought he was executed, but he escaped from it. He used the name to also hide himself from them.
Moriarity is the evil business sociopath.Mycroft is the grey bureaucratic sociopath.Sherlock is the good detective sociopath.
Three Brothers. Three Portions of a coin. The Head, The Edge, The Tail.

  8. abe says:

    Cancer, Im calling.

  9. binky88 says:

Hope it won’t be TOO dark; that is too predictable.  Every show is getting darker and darker . . .

    • justian says:

Finally T.V. is for adults and not kids.  Get Darker, adults are buying most of the subscriptions.

      • Acidhedz says:

Do you have any idea how pretentious and condescending that is? There is nothing inherently adult about dark and gritty.Honestly, I would like to know when it became childish to want to have a bit of fun when you watch tv.
I was really looking forward to the new episodes, but this announcement really sticks a dagger in. Because when I see things like “darker” and “Devastating”What I read is “We are going to suck all enjoyment out of the show.”
It’s fine the way it is. Very well balanced. Increasing the “dark” just to try and compete with garbage like game of thrones and breaking bad is idiotic.

  10. M******* says:

As long as they kill off Mary, I’ll be happy.

  11. Amy says:

I heard there was a possibility that Moriarty and Mary are related, and another rumor that Tom Hiddleston is going to play the 3rd brother.  Probably both are wrong but it’s intriguing to consider!

  12. Ida says:

There’s still that unanswered tease from last season about “the other one.”

  13. sabinada says:

as long as sherlock and watson survive i’ll be ok… even though molly’s loss would be quite sad =(

  14. Sherlock Lives says:

Moriarty kills Mary while she’s pregnant with her baby. Yeah, that may be pretty dark, but if Moriarty REALLY is alive again, I’m sure he’ll go the extra mile in evilness

    • lf says:

Sherlock takes on the job of babysitter.  That’s a pretty dark place to go and would cause them all to cry when they heard about it.

      • Alisha says:

i think if sherlock ended up babysitting, the cast would be crying from laughter

      • Ewa says:

yeah, if after a season of Sherlock-the-goofy-best-man we get Sherlock-the-hapless-babysitter, I WOULD be devastated and if the cast cares about the quality of the show, I can see them crying over it. Not from laughter, it’s not even funny anymore, just pathetic.

  15. Duncan says:

I feel like Molly will die in Sherlock’s arms.

  16. v says:

wait a minute is Sherlock wearing a denim shirt and jeans??????

    • Ash says:

That still has to be from the unaired pilot. That was the ONE thing I didn’t like about that one. I thought, “Sherlock Holmes does NOT wear jeans. How uncouth.”

  17. I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason there’s such a long wait between series is to give us time to somewhat mend our broken hearts before the run them through the wood chipper and set them on fire again.
