Shenmue III is doing something the first Shenmue game struggled to do: sell Dreamcast consoles. Okay, maybe I’m overselling that just a bit, but according to one indie game shop, the announcement of Shenmue III has sped up the sales of their Dreamcast units. The retailer revealed to MVC that they were able to move 20 Dreamcast units in one week, and they believe that’s largely thanks to the success of Shenmue III‘s Kickstarter.
âIâve had more customers hyped about Shenmue III than Call of Duty,â said David James-Turvey, an employee at a Retrobution Gaming location in Llanelli, Wales. âAll of sudden, people are asking where they can play the original two Shenmue games. The announcement of Shenmue III really piqued everyoneâs interest.â
20 Dreamcast systems may not be the biggest deal, given how it’s been regarded as a collector’s item for quite some time, but this does go to show the true power of nostalgia. I’d assume that the sales of original Xbox consoles will also see an increase once these users decide to migrate onto Shenmue II, though that could be completely mitigated with the integration of backwards compatibility into the Xbox One.
Are you planning on picking up a Dreamcast so you can revisit the Shenmue series? Let us know in the comments below.
