Serial the podcast is about to become Serial the television series.
Deadline reports that Chris Miller and Phil Lord of 22 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie fame are set to bring the popular podcast to cable, after Fox 21 Television Studios optioned the rights to the Peabody Award-winning show. The series, which is an offshoot of This American Life, would follow the making of the second season of the podcast, which was created by Julie Snyder and Sarah Koenig, with Koenig also hosting.
The television series is part of the a deal Lord and Miller signed with 20th Century Fox, where they currently executive produce Last Man on Earth for Fox as part of that deal. They are also directing the new standalone Han Solo movie.
It is still unknown what case the second season of Serial will investigate, but the show will not deal with the seasonâs first case, the murder of Hae Min Lee. There had been some reports that season two would follow the case of former American POW Bowe Bergdahl, who is accused of deserting his unit and was later part of a controversial prisoner swap, but season twoâs case remains unannounced as of this time.
We do know there will be at least two more seasons of Serial, and considering its enormous popularity the news of this new companion cable show should come as no surprise.
Do you know of any cases that would make for a good Serial investigation? Tell us about them right here in the comments below.
