See the Dazzling Designs That Won the Her Universe Fashion Show

Comic-Con can be overwhelming. You could keep busy for much longer than four days between the exhibit hall, panels, and off-site activities. But, hey, options are neat and the range of choices means you can carve out a convention experience suited to your tastes. If you’re all about geek fashion, you can shop for geek chic looks, go to panels about finding your own style, and even attend a haute couture runway event. The second annual Her Universe Fashion Show took place on Thursday, and it was a glamorous affair celebrating creativity, talent, and fandom.

As the 25 designers participating in the show discussed their designs and their backgrounds, their passion for both fashion and fandom was apparent. Almost everyone talked about how fashion design has allowed them to find a way to express their love for a particular franchise and also a part of their true selves. Their enthusiasm was inspiring. It was clear they poured sweat and energy into the work, and the ensembles they put together were stunning. I was dazzled as I watched dresses inspired by The Last Unicorn, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Big Hero 6, and more float down the runway.

Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein hosted the event, and she got to show off couture gowns as well. Her Leia, Black Widow, and Haku looks were designed by the 2014 Fashion Show Audience Choice Winner Andrew MacLaine. In news that will not surprise anyone, the Leia-inspired gown swept me off my feet, but the fancy Black Widow gown was also amazing. Eckstein’s Her Universe partnered with Hot Topic and Blondie Girl Productions for the event, and besides showing off innovative designs, the Fashion Show was a contest. The winners will work with Her Universe and Hot Topic to design a collection to be sold by Hot Topic.

And let’s get to those winners! The Judges’ Winner was Kelly Cercone. She modeled her design called “Joker’s New Look.” It’s peppy and bold.

The Audience Winner was Leetal Platt’s gorgeous Sailor Moon design called “Usagi’s Tranformation.” It was modeled by Chloe Dykstra.

In between walks down the runway, Eckstein and others mentioned some news of interest, too. First of all, if you missed out on the recent Avengers collection designed by last year’s winners, Hot Topic will be bringing back out of stock items. And speaking of the retail store, they teased that they’ll be releasing a Nightmare Before Christmas couture collection, an upscale Doctor Who collection, and an American Horror Story line in the coming months.

I’ve saved the best news for last: the Her Universe Fashion show is becoming a television series! They’ve teamed up with Blondie Girl Productions and Lionsgate Digital to air the series–it will be a reality series–on Lionsgate’s Comic-Con International streaming video-on-demand service.
