See James Franco’s SNL Documentary This Friday on Hulu

This Friday, Hulu will debut one of the many projects from filmmaker/scholar/essayist/actor James Franco. It’s Saturday Night, a 2008 behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of an episode of Saturday Night Live, with The Interview star taking a peek at the inner workings of the seemingly endless sketch show, Franco revealed through his Instagram account.

Seriously, is Franco a warlock or something? Is there a word for someone who appears to need no sleep and has his or her hands in about a million projects? The documentary is just one of the cast-off things from Franco we haven’t heard about. Between this year and 2013 alone, the multi-hyphenate Franco has had roles in eight films, directed six features and shorts (with another on the way), has his hands in some possible TV projects, and I think I read someone that he’s going to invent a new, more efficient type of blood.

I mean, that last bit was made up, but you get my point: Franco is busy.

Saturday Night, Franco’s 2008 documentary was Franco’s graduate project while he was attending New York University. Franco had access to the show leading up to the production of the December 6 episode hosted by John Malkovich. According to Entertainment Weekly, the last time anyone saw the doc was during a brief run at the Tribeca Film Festival. Since then, it’s languished as Saturday Night couldn’t quite snag distribution.

However, Hulu has stepped up, and the documentary will air on the streaming service beginning June 26. No word on if Saturday Night will be available on other platforms or via physical media.
