Screenwriter Alex Garland Says He and Danny Boyle Are Discussing 28 MONTHS LATER

It’s been almost 13 years since the Danny Boyle-directed 28 Days Later helped to reinvigorate and usher in a new era of horror filmmaking. Boyle’s movie was followed by the excellent 28 Weeks Later in 2007 and most horror fans have wondered at some point or another, “Will the franchise continue?”

While speaking to IGN about his directorial debut Ex Machina, 28 Days Later… screenwriter Alex Garland, a frequent Danny Boyle collaborator, gave an update on the favorite horror series saying, “We’ve just started talking about it seriously. We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into [it], but there’s a possibility.” Garland continued, “It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years,” adding, “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”

IGN notes that Garland will more than likely serve as an EP on the third installment instead of returning to write the screenplay. This served the team well in the case of 28 Weeks Later, a strong sequel that was well received upon its release. While a follow up to Danny Boyle’s new genre classic could have easily been a silly cash grab, 28 Weeks starred Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Idris Elba and Imogen Poots, and saw the militarization of London in the aftermath of the RAGE virus spreading throughout England. There’s no telling where 28 Months might take us but after the tease at the end of the second film, we’re led to believe that the virus has spread to Paris and potentially all over Europe.

Are you excited for more of the 28… series? Considering the threat of pandemic that was a hot headline in 2014, the storyline is more topical than ever. Who do you think should direct the third installment? My vote is Game of Thrones and The Descent director Neil Marshall. Tell us your thoughts and theories for a third film in the comments below!

This is such a no brainer to me. 28 weeks later was such a complex and well written and directed movie.  There is much more to this story.  Especially in this frightening real world.   Danny Boyle has to do this story. No one else will have the clarity and insight to make it work.  It would be very sad to have someone else come in and ruin this complex story.   I’m a huge huge walking dead fan but 28 weeks later kicks the crap out of it.   Just an opinion.   Seriously I really do love the walking dead but 28 weeks later is excellent

I want to apologize over my own rant. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was the terrific director of 28 weeks  later I should have checked my facts. Just please do the movie and I will stay off the comment section.  Sorry.

They could do 28 Centuries Later and have it be a distant future zombie post-apocalypse film, but that’s reaching a bit.
