Greetings, ghouls! It’s that time again. Time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. We dug through the record crates to find the new tunes we think you need to spin and rage to. Looking for a few new death metal tunes to set the mood for some tricks or treats? Got you covered. Need some grindcore to get the Devil’s Night started right? Say no more. Strap in kiddies—let’s get spooky.
Car Bomb’s new album Meta is finally upon us, and it is a monster. Chaotic, heavy, and slick (really, really slick), Car Bomb is reaching new heights here. It’s like cocktail made from one part The Dillinger Escape Plan, one part Gojira, and one part broken, bloody glass. Furious doesn’t even begin to describe this stuff; it’s brimming over with anger and fury. This album is just fan-freaking-tastic. Make sure you check out this insanity; it’ll wake you up in the morning. It’s like injecting espresso straight into your heart.
The Menzingers are back and they sound sorta… happy? Sure, the lyrics to their new track “Bad Catholics” are a downer, but you can’t deny that the song is upbeat sounding. There’s something uplifting about this tune (as long as you don’t listen to the words). “Bad Catholics” is the first track off their new album, which is due early next year. When it comes to earnest punk rock with soul, nobody does it better than The Menzingers. We’re crazy excited for a new record from these dudes.
When it comes to setting the mood for a spooky evening, Esben and The Witch are peerless. Old Terrors is a haunting and seductive record. It’s sexy and dark, the sort of album that draws you in and won’t let go. This is the soundtrack of a dark, empty highway, of a forgotten field blanketed in the dim glow of a starry night. It’s a truly visionary work that transports the listener; listening to Old Terrors will send you on a journey. Esben and The Witch just keep getting better and better. Old Terrors is their best work to date, which, considering the brilliant level of output from this band, is really saying something.

Wow, this stuff is awesome. We’re just discovering Youth Funeral, but holy cow, right? This is some vicious and raw noise rock. They sound like METZ jamming Converge. Seriously, listen to “Unthought” below and we dare you to not pre-order the album immediately after. You can’t help it! It’s just to rad! We’re onboard with Youth Funeral. We’re drinking their Kool-Aid. We’re writing their name in blood on the wall of our apartment. Youth Funeral. For real. Listen to this band, guys. Next big thing right here.
If you’re craving something of the weirder variety, check out 11Paranoias. Their track “Milk Amnesia” is violent and challenging. It’s a wall of sound that is filled with screeching guitars, feedback, wailing vocals, and thunderous drums. It starts with chaos and it ends abruptly, never giving you a chance to get comfortable. The video that accompanies the song is equally discomforting. 11Paranoias don’t sound like anybody else making music right now, and that’s something that should be celebrated. This band is so strange and unique, we can’t help but love them.
Since it’s Halloween time, we are obligated to share our favorite haunted melody of all time, “I Drink Blood” from Rocket From the Crypt. Now, just in case you don’t know, Rocket From the Crypt is literally the greatest band ever. Literally. Nobody has or will ever come close. They put on the best live show, the put out the best records, and they put the “rock” in “rock n’ roll.” This low-fi B-side sounds like it was recorded on a boombox in a garage, which is not a bad thing. As an added bonus, some intrepid YouTuber made a video montage of vampire imagery to go along with the song. So, light the candles, summon the spirits of rock, and listen to Rocket From the Crypt.
Lastly, we wanted to draw attention to the fact that one of our favorite hardcore acts is touring again. After years of inactivity, Daughters is out and about, hitting the road and talking about maybe making some new music. Their last album was released in 2010 and it’s a freaking masterpiece. It sounds as exciting and unique today as it did back then, so the prospect of new tunes form these guys is something to be very, very stoked about. That’s right. Stoked. We said it. We are stoked and we are stoked and we don’t care who knows it.
Oh, and it’s worth noting that Daughters are touring with Loma Prieta and The Body. That is one hell of an amazing lineup. If the shows in your town aren’t already sold, we highly suggest you get your butt out of the house and go get your ears pummeled by these supremely awesome bands.
