Scooby Snacks and More are Oxford Dictionary Bound

Scooby Snacks and More are Oxford Dictionary Bound

There are few places more venerated than the Oxford English Dictionary so you can imagine that the release of a new set of words that will be added to its pages are often met with trepidation and glee from all corners of the internet. Thursday was no exception as the site released the latest set of terms that will be added to the latest update.

Past additions have included selfie and twerk, and I think most people who were going to roll their eyes at millennial culture did roll them so hard at those additions that their eyes probably fell from their faces. That said, we nerds who grew up watching a certain hound dog walk on two legs who helped solve mysteries must all be celebrating the newly added “Scooby Snacks” which will grace the newest version of the dictionary.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the OED will define Scooby Snacks as “A snack, esp. given as a reward or inducement; spec. a bite-sized treat or a large multilayered sandwich (likened to those eaten by the cartoon character Scooby-Doo)… Also: food eaten to satisfy a hunger induced by drinking, smoking, or drug use.”

Other words being added to the dictionary today include “listicle” (Thanks Buzzfeed), “Bovvered,” and ROFL, and that’s just a few. Subscribers to Oxford’s dictionaries will have more than 1000 new words to look forward to finding. Let’s be very real here: There are so many words in the OED that it would take a lifetime just to read them all, but know they’re there in print makes me feel better about the state of language. Someone cared enough to write it all down.

And with this little announcement, I think it’s time for a Scooby snack. At least now I know it’s OED sanctioned.
