Saves The Day Celebrates 15th Anniversary Of ‘Through Being Cool’ By Offering Up Oral History

Prince has been telling people to party like it’s 1999 since, well, 1982. However, for a growing group of teens—mostly centered around the suburbs of New York and New Jersey—suffering from middle class angst and an affinity for pop punk, the soundtrack to life during 1999 was probably Saves The Day’s second album, Through Being Cool.

This year, the LP turns 15 and to celebrate, WIRED recently released an oral history of the album. Whether you grew up singing along to songs like “All-Star Me” and “Holly, Hox Forget Me Not,” or just discovered STD after recent stints with Say Anything or the Vans Warped Tour, frontman Chris Conley & Co. comment on what the band (and the scene) was going through when this essential album was first released.

Highlights:
– Many of the song lyrics were written by Conley while he attended college lectures for Psychology 101 at New York University.
– It took 11 days to record the entire album. Two additional days were added when Conley blew out his voice tracking vocals.
– Gabe Saporta (Midtown, Cobra Starship) appears on the then-controversial album cover. So does actor James Ransone (aka Ziggy Sobotka from HBO’s The Wire).
– The video for “Shoulder To The Wheel” was shot at guitarist Dave Soloway’s parents’ house.

Starting in mid-November, Saves The Day will be hitting the road, performing Through Being Cool front-to-back to celebrate the album’s 15th anniversary. Along for the ride is Say Anything, who’ll be performing …Is A Real Boy in its entirety, and Reggie And The Full Effect, who’ll be performing Under The Tray in full.

Tourdates can be found on the band’s site.
