SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE’s STAR WARS Parody Asks: and What About The Oldies?

Sure, there’s a heck of a lot of newness going on in the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens trailer. A lot of it! Shiny, new characters; cool as all get-out effects; and a whole mess of stuff said to operate as a continuation of the original three films. But Saturday Night Live posited the question that’s yet to be answered on one particular galactic front: where does the old crew fit into all of this?

After all, it’s already been confirmed that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill are returning to the series, playing their original roles. But as we saw in the teaser, those players have yet to be shown, leaving a lot of room for speculation and theories. It makes the perfect breeding ground for a bit of James Franco-fronted comedy on SNL.

Obviously the biggest question we have after watching this is if you were upset about the trisaber, what are your feelings on the saberwalker? (Or would we call it a lightwalker?) How does that hold up in the Star Wars canon, eh? Guess we’ll have to wait and see what Stephen Colbert has to say on the matter.

Until the jury returns with a verdict on that front, we’ll have to settle for “it’s fine.” Things age, after all — and times change! Though not Chewie really all that much — we thought he’d have a lot more gray hairs by now. Taran Killam really nailed Harrison Ford’s general cantankery, though.

What’d you think of the parody? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
