San Diego Comic-Con Unveils Plans to Honor Leonard Nimoy

Star Trek icon Leonard Nimoy passed away a few months before last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which limited the convention’s opportunity to fully acknowledge his legacy. But later this month, Comic-Con has some big plans to honor both Nimoy and his famous character Spock.

Via Mashable, Comic-Con has unveiled the cover for this year’s programming guide, which features an artistic portrait of Nimoy as Spock by artist Ty Mattson. The programming guide is given to every person who attends Comic-Con, which means that it’s not going to be hard to get your hands on this if you’re heading to San Diego!

This year is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and several Trek-related panels and programming will be on the Comic-Con schedule. Mattson’s Nimoy portrait will also be display at Michael J. Wolf Gallery in San Diego alongside other Star Trek inspired artwork and some of Nimoy’s final artistic photographs.

It’s fitting that Comic-Con is paying tribute to Nimoy, since he was one of the most popular guests on the convention circuit and he had made several appearances in San Diego over the last few decades. Comic-Con 2016 will also overlap with the release of Star Trek Beyond, which will get its world premiere on the first day of the event on Wednesday, July 20.
