Back in 2001, Samurai Jack: The Premiere Movie introduced fans to the titular hero as he was thrust from his own time and into the far-future ruled by the demon Aku. At the time, it would have been very unusual for Cartoon Network to premiere the series in theaters. But now, the time has come for Samurai Jack‘s first adventure to make the leap to the big screen.
Via ComicBook.com, Adult Swim and Fathom Events are co-sponsoring The Samurai Jack: The Premiere Movie Event; which will be screened at select theaters on Monday, October 16 at 7:00 pm local time. It’s a one-night only event, so this will be your only chance to see it theatrically. Additionally, the movie will be screened with never-before-seen bonus material from the Samurai Jack: The Complete Series Blu-ray box set, which will be released on Tuesday, October 17. If you’re looking for ticket info and locations, you can find that information here.
Truthfully, there are a lot of Samurai Jack episodes that would probably look great on the big screen. Series creator and director, Genndy Tartakovsky, demonstrated a lot of talent in his staging of the action and the stories. That’s why it wasn’t shocking when Tartakovsky went on to direct animated feature films. The downside was that Tartakovsky left fans hanging for over a decade. The first four seasons of the series didn’t offer any resolution for Jack’s attempt to defeat Aku and return to his own time.
But earlier this year, Tartakovsky came back and finished his story with the fifth season of Samurai Jack on Adult Swim. And this time, the show finally got the satisfying ending that it deserved. It’s become an epic unto itself, and the Blu-ray complete series box set is definitely something that we can’t wait to get our hands on. The entire show is a masterpiece, especially if you love animation.
