Sam Raimi and Warner Bros. are about to declare World War III. Raimi has been signed to direct the film adaptation of George Friedmanâs nonfiction book, The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century.
While Friedmanâs novel doesnât really have a story, it does contain several dire predictions that postulate a new era for civilization as the U.S. war on terror morphs into a new Cold War with Russia, in addition to the rise of Mexico as a world power while Chinaâs influence diminishes, as well as technological advances that change the way that humanity lives and wages wars.
Without a real narrative to hang the story on, Raimi and his chosen screenwriters will likely pick out the most interesting ideas in the book and build a story around them. Given that the movie version is being called World War III, itâs a pretty safe bet that the U.S. and Russian Cold War wonât be cold for very long. It’s time to reopen those fallout shelters!
Raimiâs most recent feature film was Oz the Great and Powerful, which was released in 2013. He is best known for helming the Evil Dead trilogy and the Spider-Man trilogy, in addition to Drag Me To Hell, Darkman, A Simple Plan, and The Gift. Raimi is currently producing the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series for Starz.
