Remember last year when our hearts went all atwitter at the news that multi-hyphenate and best friend to fandoms everywhere, Lin-Manuel Miranda, signed on to adapt Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle books? Well get ready to have the quality of that kooky venture confirmed as Sam Raimi has agreed to direct the film adaptation, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter.
Everybody break out your best, most magical lute and let’s get to celebratin’!
Raimi has a long history in the genre space, known for creating Evil Dead (as well as producing the TV iteration of Ash’s story in Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead) and bringing the original Spider-Man trilogy to the big screen. And Miranda is a huge nerd in his own right: in addition to being the mind behind the mega Broadway hits In The Heights and Hamilton, he’s a longtime comic book fan and genre buff and has worked on Disney fare like the 2017 DuckTales reboot, Moana, and Mary Poppins Returns.
As for this mysterious Kingkiller that’s got these two dudes all excited? His name is Kvothe, and his taleâas told to Devan Lochees (known as the Chronicler)âspans decades and many, many tales of a life lived through music, scholarly endeavors, and adventures. The whole story is told over a three day period, with each book depicting one day of Kvothe recounting his life and various encounters. Oh, and he’s also a very, very inspired lute player, which makes this particular author (whose last name is lutes!) very happy.
Now, this is only news regarding the movie iteration of this story. But if you’ll remember from our original reporting, this was a beast of a project, with Miranda slated to produce a film, television, and stage adaptation of this particular tale. So keep an eye out and get ready for a heck of a lot more news on this front.
What do you think of Raimi joining the project? Looking forward to this adaptation? Let us know in the comments below.
