For as much money as they make at the global box office, comic book movies get pretty much zero love at the Academy Awards. This is true actually of most populist cinema and blockbuster type films, but comic book movies especially get no respect but that snooty old Academy. I mean sure, there are outliers — they kind of had to give the late Heath Ledger an Oscar for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight right? But other than that one instance, the Oscars look down on superhero movies big time.
But could that change this year? After all, the Golden Globes nominated Deadpool for their “Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy” category, and star Ryan Reynolds also got a Golden Globes nomination for best actor. Now, the Globes are not the Oscars, just by virtue of even having a “musical or comedy” category to begin with, but often times the Golden Globes nominations are seen as a prelude to Academy Awards season. So there is a chance, however unlikely, that Deadpool will get an Oscar nomination. Stranger things have happened lately in the world after all.
In a cheeky effort to get the Academy to “consider” Deadpool for that highest of movie honors, Ryan Reynolds has just narrated a “For Your Consideration” video for the movie, which he just posted via his Twitter account. As one might expect, the “For Your Consideration” video is pretty much as hilarious as the actual film itself. I mean, I don’t know about you, but I know that I’d vote for Deadpool after this convincing plea, wouldn’t you? You can watch Ryan Reynolds’ full video down below.
