Anyone who stayed through the credits of Deadpool earlier this year was already aware of Ryan Reynolds‘ in-character promise that the time-traveling mutant hero known as Cable will be appearing in Deadpool 2. Despite the recent departure of director Tim Miller, Reynolds has indicated that bringing in Cable is still the plan, and another familiar face from the comics has also been confirmed.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds said “weâre just in the development stage but weâre about to move into production,â before noting that casting for Cable has already begun, with fellow X-Force member Domino also joining the action as perhaps one of the new female leads. In the comics, Domino’s mutant ability is her incredible luck. Reynolds was also effusive with praise for Miller, while also speaking highly of incoming director David Leitch. âEverybody was just a fan of his work,â related Reynolds. âHeâs just a guy whoâs so muscular with his action. He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick. One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.â
Reynolds’ comments were echoed by producer Simon Kinberg, who indicated that the creative team wants to maintain the spirit of the original film. “Thatâs the biggest mandate going into on the second film: to not make it bigger,” shared Kinberg. “We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie. But actually stay true to the tenets of itâs the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special â itâs not the explosions and the special effects.â
Deadpool 2 doesn’t currently have a release date, but we think there’s a pretty good chance that it will be coming out in 2018.
