Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal Encounter a Martian in LIFE Trailer

Well, this is a movie that snuck up on a lot of us. It seems that next year, it won’t be Independence Day that sees a big-screen alien encounter, but Memorial Day, as Deadpool and Donnie Darko themselves head into space to discover a single-celled life from Mars. One that packs a lot of power into its protoplasm.

Life is directed by Chilean-Swedish helmer Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), and also features Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation female lead Rebecca Ferguson, frequent BBC stalwart Ariyon Bakare (New Blood, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell), and The Wolverine‘s Hiroyuki Sanada. It’s not clear in the trailer yet quite how the International Space Station gets hold of their Martian cell, but what is clear is the crew never watched a bunch of other disaster-in-space movies and had the subsequent talk on the crucial issue of “What do we do if somebody is infected and locked out but wants to get back in?” (Astronauts: you have some free time up there. Make some for this conversation.)

Also: If you here John F. Kennedy’s voice on the soundtrack of your life, it means something bad’s about to happen. But hey, if Ryan Reynolds is nearby wielding a flamethrower, maybe the world (and all of outer space) can be saved.

How would you fight a super-powered single cell? Are you game to see an international team give it their best shot…in space? Will Gyllenhaal become a Giger-esque sex monster like Patrick in Species II? [SPOILER: probably not, because this isn’t a Species movie.] And next spring, will you be tormenting any friends you have named Mike who go to see this by constantly saying, “He likes it! Hey Mikey!”?
