Rumor: The SPIDER-MAN Reboot May Be Called SPIDER-MAN: THE NEW AVENGER

Do you remember the halcyon days of Spider-Man films when they were simply subtitled with a number or not at all? Perhaps taking a page from the wall-crawler’s ill-fated Broadway adaptation, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, rumors are circulating that the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot could be titled Spider-Man: The New Avenger. Yep, you read that right — The New Avenger. Not Spider-Man Into Darkness, not Spider-Man: The Return of the King, not Spider-Man: Ecks vs. Sever, but Spider-Man: The New Avenger.

First reported by Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, the new title would give immediate context to Spider-Man’s entry into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, and echoes The First Avenger subtitle of the original Captain America film. According to Kevin Feige, the new film–rumored to be written and directed by Drew Goddard–will focus on a teenaged, high school-age version of Peter Parker. Recently, reports of a shortlist of candidates to play Peter Parker have been making the rounds. The list includes Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), Liam James (The Way, Way Back), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), and Tom Holland (The Impossible).

The new Spider-Man film, whatever the hell it’s called, will hit theaters on July 27, 2017.
