Rumor: Roberto Orci Wants to Reunite William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy for STAR TREK 3

We know very little about the plot details of Star Trek 3 (or Star Trek 13, if you want to be technical about it.) We know the co-screenwriter of the previous two installments, Roberto Orci, is making his directorial debut with this one, and we know that the movie is set well into the five-year mission of the crew of the Enterprise. But this latest tidbit should have hardcore Trekkers foaming at the mouth with excitement: according to a report in Badass Digest, it seems Orci, a huge old-school Trek fan himself, wants to reunite William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, presumably for the last time. The last time these two actors shared the screen together as these characters was in 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, which was the last film featuring the original crew.

Other attempts had been made to reunite them on screen since then Trek VI. In 1994’s Star Trek: Generations, the opening prologue, which was set on the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B, featured Shatner as Kirk, along with Walter Koenig as Chekov and James Doohan as Scotty, giving the new ship a proper send-off. The original script called for Kirk along with Spock and Doctor McCoy instead, but both Leonard Nimoy and DeForrest Kelley declined to come back for what amounted to be a pretty minor cameo, so they were replaced with Koenig and Doohan. Then when it came time for JJ Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek reboot, it was Nimoy who came back as Spock and Shatner who declined, as he didn’t want to do a mere cameo. The cameo itself would have been a holographic recording of Kirk that Spock kept with him, since the movie Generations had killed him off.

So could Orci have the winning formula in his script to reunite these two sci-fi legends one last time? There would be historical significance to it as Star Trek:3 is set to be released in 2016, the 50th anniversary year of the entire franchise. Although Star Wars is often given all the credit for launching the sci-fi-dominated pop culture landscape we all enjoy living in now, truthfully Star Trek did it first. To have Shatner and Nimoy reunited after twenty-five years, alongside their younger counterparts Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, would help to make this movie something truly special, and mark a fairly big anniversary in geek culture.

Would you like to see Shatner and Nimoy together on the big screen again? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Kevin Deevey says:

Absolutely!  Maybe it’s a mission to change history and save Captain Kirk from Viridian III?  That would indeed be *fascinating*.

  2. Leonard Minot says:

    The reboots suck big time

  3. Orionsangel says:

Will they ever take the training wheels off the New Star Trek? I understood the first film having Leonard Nimoy as old Spock. It was a way of the old cast handing over the baton to the new cast and giving their blessing. Alright, great start! Now let’s start this new journey.

Here comes the sequel. Wait, they’re bringing back Khan? They’re reusing a famous line from Star Trek II: The Motion Picture? What’s next? The return of old Spock? There he is on screen! D’oh! Enough already! How about some originality. Let this new young cast fly on their own and make new adventures.

  4. James Holder says:

Yes, I would love to see them together one (possibly last) time.  Sniff, sniff.

  5. A Nerdnick says:

who care? the reboot sucks anyway.

  6. George Rodriguez says:

As an avid Star Trek fan, the thought of uniting the old 2 with the new 2 would be fantastic!

  7. Cecily says:

Yes, if Nimoy’s health holds out.

    Hell yes please

  9. Judy Hume says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. e says:

Is that a trick question? OF. COURSE!!!!

  11. Saifol Shamlan says:

Yes, I certainly do! “Into Darkness” was a fizzle to me, despite all that action. Khan was written badly. The Trek game pieces were put in place but there was no Trek feel in it. For Star Trek XIII, please join old Spock with Kirk in the Nexus and have them work (amazingly) together to restore the timeline (but not 100%) such that the Chris Pine crew, and their alternate, gigantic USS Enterprise find themselves in Year 4 of the original mission. And let the franchise take it from there. How does the plot go to make that possible? Well, that’s up to the ingenuity of the many contemporary screenwriters around today. Just make sure that he or she is a genuine Trek fan.

    ABSO-
FRICKIN-LUTELY!!! (LOVE “You bet your tribble!”) =D

  13. Petunia says:

YES-that would be awesome for the 50th anniversary and love the pic from devil in the dark episode.

  14. Stan Baker says:

    YES!

  15. Larry Cosgrove says:

A resounding “no” from this Star Trek fan…Generations ruined the chance. If the franchise can be saved, then the best idea would be to project forward beyond the time frame of STNG.

  16. Buford Hart says:

I WOULD SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LIKE TO SEE THAT HAPPEN !!!!!!!!

  17. Julia says:

Let’s see it.  i’m keeping my eyes open for this.

  18. Steeno says:

    Definately.

  19. Mary says:

I think that would be amazing because it would give my generation a chance to see who started Kirk and spock and put them with the younger versions of the characters.

  20. Shatner and Nimoy together again, sounds like a long overdue idea!

  21. todd says:

I thinbk if your gona go out big bring as many olde ones in to this one in cameos for at least 15 minutes each might make it a big blocke buster

  22. FeistyAmazon says:

Yes always..I am most loyal to the original series though theres some fine actors in the other ones too. Id like to see a DS9 with those original actors movie too.

  23. john mak says:

It would be an awesome movie to have Kirk and Spock fight their older generation mirror counterparts.  Have an all-out space battle between both crews.

  24. Tom Sartwell says:

YES !!! I’ve been a Trekie since the first episode and have loved the original (seen countless reruns) and every spin off!

  25. JIM STOCK says:

R U KIDDIN’ ME? I WOULD BE IN TEARS!!

  26. YES YES YES!!!!!!!

  27. I think it would be great to get the two back into the Star Trek franchise…especially when it’s going to be released on the 50th Anniversary of ST!! 😀

  28. Emily Podsobinski says:

That would’ve amazing. When u read this I told everyone at my office job very loudly asking everyone if they were as excited as me. Unfortunately I work with a bunch of non-nerds.

  29. Mickey says:

Gimmick.  Please don’t do it.  It’s already been done to death.

  30. Keith says:

Not unless the next movie restores Vulcan,  rescinds everything JJ Abrams has done, and puts things back into their proper reality.

  31. YES says:

YEEES YEEEEEES YEES YEEEEEEEEES YES YES YES YES YES

  32. Wonderful because what this franchise needed after the second movie was more winks and call backs to the original series instead of you know… competent story telling.  Maybe both Kirks can kick the warp core now.

  33. Yes, of course. I’m almost as old as the show, and would use an alternate time-dimension, to explain old surviving Kirk, now teaching Shakespeare and stage combat on Cetius IV

  34. Henry says:

Why Not…It would be great to see them together again…

  35. McGillicutte says:

A shout out to the entire cast might be fun, but it does take me “out of the story” just a smidge.

  36. Pismo Donzi says:

No, it would be to hokey.

  37. mitch says:

    no. shatner is a joke.

  38. paula says:

OMG of course!! it goes without saying!!!!

  39. Jayda Tenaye Wynn says:

    Yes

  40. A Nerdnick says:

New Trek, destined to be remembered along side New Coke.

  41. David says:

Definitely all original series regulars, and lest us not forget Christoper Doohan who  has the same acting chops, voice and looks as his father. Makeup will surely age him enough to current time standards.
