Have Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel found their Carol Danvers? Despite rumors circulating recently that Mad Max: Fury Road’s Charlize Theron was looking at possibly taking the part, a new rumor suggests that instead, Marvel Studios are looking at casting Rebecca Ferguson in the title role of Captain Marvel. The actress recently made quite an impression on audiences with her turn as a British spy in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Before that, the 31 year old Swedish born actress starred in the television series The White Queen.
Captain Marvel is a huge priority right now for Marvel Studios, as it will be their first solo superhero film with a female in the lead. There haven’t been any female-centric superhero films since the both Elektra and Catwoman bombed a decade or so back, which seems to be the go-to answer for sexist studio execs as to why female led superhero movies “can’t work.” (Even though no one ever suggested that male-centric superhero movies were doomed when Green Lantern flopped; heck, we’re even getting another superhero movie with Ryan Reynolds in it.)
The character of Air Force pilot Carol Danvers first appeared in the pages of Captain Marvel way back in 1969, and it was only a few short years later that she became his female counterpart, Ms. Marvel, even gaining her own title that lasted longer than the original Captain Marvel’s did. After serving as an Avenger for decades on and off, she quickly outgrew the male Marvel in both popularity and overall importance to the Marvel universe. A few years back, Carol finally dropped the “Ms” from her title, and has officially became Captain Marvel, cementing her importance and dropping the last shreds of being just a “girl sidekick” character for good.
