Rumor: Mandalorians & The Nightsisters to Feature in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

The good folks at Latino Review have dropped anotherStar Wars scoop on us, and this one has nothing to do with poor old Harrison Ford or his broken leg. Instead, they revealed some information about just who the good guys will be facing in Episode VII, and both of these reveals should make long time Star Wars fans very happy.

The first rumor has to do with the mercenaries that are said to be causing trouble for our heroes, who are said to be none other than the Mandalorians. Hardcore Star Wars fans know that both Boba Fett and his father Jango Fett used Mandalorian armor, but weren’t Mandalorians themselves. In various novels and comics, the Mandalorians are described as being a lethal tribe of warriors who eventually became the best bounty hunters in the galaxy. The Clone Wars animated series, however, has a somewhat different take on the Mandalorians, as they are a militant offshoot of the now peaceful world of Mandalore, who called themselves “The Deathwatch”.

While the whole “Expanded Universe” of Star Wars is no longer canon, according to Lucasfilm, The Clone Wars animated series is, so whatever version of the Mandalorians we see in Episode VII is going to have to line up with that. Which should be fine, because the Mandalorian Deathwatch as presented on that series were very bad ass.  Reports from set that Latino Review have received claim to have seen some black and silver/chrome troopers. Are these Mandalorians or new Imperial Stormtroopers? Time will tell.

The other hot rumor posted has to do with what they are referring to as “Sith Witches.” While there aren’t any “Sith” witches per se in Star Wars, there are the Witches of Dathomir, who use spells and rituals to harness the Dark Side of the Force. While this concept was introduced in the Expanded Universe novels, again, Mother Talzin and the Nightsisters were used extensively on The Clone Wars animated show, which makes them an official part of Star Wars canon now. There are lots of rumors that Lupita Nyong’o is playing a villain, some even suggesting she is playing Nightsister Asajj Ventress, but I doubt she is going to be an already established character. Playing an all new Nightsister seems a distinct possibility though.

  1. Ben says:

Jango Fett was a death watch descendant and became a member of a group called the True Mandalorians… He is 100% Mandalorian!

  2. Azriel says:

It’s hard to argue with the prequels, convoluted and unclear as they were. Lucas lost touch in what he had created years ago.  Many others, including Karen Traviss, took the torch and fleshed out the cultures and races of the Star Wars Universe.  Traviss even created the language that the Mando’s speak.  Though much of the EU has been disregarded, it was my understanding that they are still picking through the information and some of the EU stories and characters may still carry over into canon.  The proof of that is the night sisters and Darth Bane from “The Clone Wars”.

The definition of Mandalorian per Wookiepedia:

“The Mandalorians—known in Mando’a as the Mando’ade, or “Children of Mandalore”—were a nomadic group of clan-based people consisting of members from multiple species and multiple genders, all bound by a common culture.”
    Wookieepedia

I realize that is “Wookiepedia” lol, but there was a precedent for all species accepted into Mandalorian clans set in the books; as long as you accepted their culture you were a “Mandalorian”.  I hope some of the Mando’s ARE strong females, as they were some of the best and most bada## characters in the EU.  My 501st Legion costume is Jaster Mereel, who is known as the father figure to Jango as well as the alias that Boba used when traveling the galaxy (and in the first story written about him since the Sarlaac fiasco lol), and though I doubt any of that will be used it would just be a shame to waste all of that back history.

I think we will see that Boba is going to be retconned as well, at least from the EU story of him (and the game 1313 that was canceled) to tell the new story about his journey to the armor in the stand-alone Boba Fett movie that is sure to come out.

  3. TruthErryDay says:

I’m just looking forward to the backlash about the strong female characters all being villains.  Haha!  As long as they pass the Bechdel test…

  4. Joe says:

Boba and Jango Fett were never Mandalorian?

Let me make sure I read that right…

Jango Fett was Mandalorian born and raised on Concord Dawn, an agricultural planet in the Mandalorian Sector. He would eventually *lead* the Mandalorians in a civil war as Mandalore.

Boba, while a clone, was still raised as the son of Jango. Those who watched only the movies thought he died in Episode VI, but he escaped the sarlaac and went on to meet Fenn Shysa. At Shysa’s deathbed, Fett made the promise to bring Mandalorians back together, and in doing so he became Mandalore as well.

To say that “hardcore fans know that… Fett wasn’t Mandalorian” is being ignorant of the expanded universe and the fandom itself. Please check your facts and revise this.

    • Ian says:

You realize that whole expanded universe you’re talking about isn’t canon and therefore means nothing as it pertains to the new movies right?

      • Alasdair says:

Just to note, they did say that all expanded universe that contradicts the movies was going to be non-canon, I think; not necessarily all in general. For instance, in an interview, quite a few of them mentioned an interest in things like SWTOR and KotOR, for instance, and how they viewed it as canon still, because it wouldn’t be contradicting the movies. While the given example is admittedly thousands of years prior, just an example off the top of my head. Even in SWTOR, there is also clan Fett; such as the Mandalorian captain you meet on Taris.

    • derpdigler says:

I thought he met up with Dengar and killed Jodo Kast. Merp.

    • ddd says:

That being said, Disney has already confirmed that the Expanded Universe is not canon for the new trilogy.

    • Eric Diaz says:

In the movies, which in now the only thing that is officially canon, Jango Fett is not a Mandalorian. In the Clone Wars episodes set on Mandalore they went out of their way to make that clear, that his armor was Mandalorian be he was not. And as Lucasfilm has stated, only the 6 movies and the Clone Wars are canon now. THAT’S IT. EU, no matter how much we might like it, is not.

      • Bham says:

They were referring to his way of life, at that time. He was Mandalorian and Mandalore as well. Pre Visla did not like the fact that Jango was helping the republic create the clone army. Like saying he is an ex Mandalorian.

  5. JetpackBlues says:

If true, this movie is going to end up being even more of a cameo/callback shitshow than Star Trek ’09.

  6. LongBottomLeaf says:

Ive always hated the animated show, except for the one made by the Samurai Jack creator’s. But i guess i am force to watch it now just for the Witches of Dathomir. They might actually incorporate the Ashla and Bogon schools of the Force.

    • Thomas says:

Come on watch and be amazed the last season with all the Mandilorian fights and light saber battles are just incredible dont hate on the CGI it works quite well and gets the job done.
