ROGUE ONE’s Alternate Ending Has Finally Been Revealed

Back in December, Rogue One kicked off the Star Wars anthology films with a story about the theft of the Death Star plans and the shockingly high price that was paid for that act of rebellion. Remember, Rogue One was only the second movie made since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, and no one expected it to go that dark…not even the screenwriter! Now, Rogue One‘s originally planned ending has been revealed, and today’s Nerdist News is sharing the details!

There are massive spoilers ahead for the ending of Rogue One, but come on, people! You’ve had over three months to see it, so consider yourselves warned!

Join host and former Jedha correspondent, Jessica Chobot, as she examines the new comments by Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta. If you’ve seen the film, then you know that none of the Rebels on Scarif made it out alive. However, Whitta told EW that it was always the intent for the heroes to die, but there was fear that Disney would reject it outright. So, who survived in that stage of the story? Naturally, it would have been Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor. While they ended up dying in the shockwave of a Death Star blast in the final movie, they would have been spared that fate when a Rebel ship picked them up from the surface of the planet.

The most intriguing thing about this revelation is that Jyn and Cassian who would have been desperately trying to escape from Darth Vader in the film’s climatic moment, instead of a group of rebel soldiers. While that would have certainly been a dramatic way to go, both Jyn and Cassian would have escaped again and met up with Princess Leia’s ship later. We could have lived with that ending, but we feel that director Gareth Edwards and Lucasfilm got it right in the finished film. This story is much more powerful if everyone made the ultimate sacrifice for the galaxy. The studio’s willingness to go there has us excited to know that Lucasfilm and Disney won’t be afraid to let things get dark when the story calls for it.

What do you think about Rogue One‘s alternate conclusion? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
