ROGUE ONE is Doing a Ton of Reshoots

Rogue One is heading to theaters on December 16, but it looks like the story isn’t finalized as Gareth Edwards and the rest of the Rogue One team might have hoped. According to Page Six, the film is undergoing extensive re-shoots in July. Nerdist has reached out to Disney for comment but has gotten no response at time of publication.

Rogue One is going to take a bit of a darker tone than other Star Wars movies. The film will center around a group of rebels stealing the plans to the Death Star, and we can expect to see plenty of our favorite baddie, Darth Vader in the film. It sounds badass, and if the trailer is any indication, the film is set up to be amazing. So why the re-shoots? Well, it’s unclear. The rumor circulating is that Disney isn’t stoked on the Gareth Edwards film as it stands now. Allegedly, the film fell way below the expectations set by J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII.

Of course this isn’t a reason to panic. After all, the film failing to meet Disney expectations is a 100% unsubstantiated rumor. Plus, re-shoots are a pretty normal thing in the film world, and movies we’ve all loved like Guardians of the Galaxy and even The Force Awakens have gone through it. For a film to re-shoot doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a failure, it can just mean they’ve discovered a better way to tell the story. The stakes are crazy high for Rogue One, so it makes sense that Disney is going to make absolutely certain the film released to the public in December is their best effort. The Disney rep who spoke with Page Six even added that additional shooting was always anticipated, and everyone (including the actors) knew it was coming to ensure the film was nothing short of excellent.

So take heart, Star Wars fans. Rogue One is undergoing re-shoots, but it doesn’t mean anything is wrong or broken, necessarily. Disney’s just doing some last-minute polishing and fine-tuning to deliver us a helluva movie come December, and I can’t wait.

Do you think movie re-shoots automatically mean trouble? Do you think Rogue One is going to add to the Star Wars canon in a good way? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Let’s fawn over that first Rogue One trailer all over again!
