Did you know that before last year’s December release of The Force Awakens every previous Star Wars movie had come to theaters in May? It’s true. You can look it up and everything. But then Disney came along and decided that the greatest nerd day on the calendar, a new story from the galaxy far, far away, rightfully belonged in the middle of the holiday season. That’s why now, Disney is introducing the tradition of making Christmastime a Star Wars-adjacent event, like it is this year with December 16th’s release of Rogue One. The gift giving season and the single most marketable movie franchise of all time go together like mistletoe and complaints to HR. In fact, they go together so well that they are the greatest excuse we could ever hope for to bring back the best, most amazing crossover mankind has ever known. That’s right, it’s an all new addition of Toy Smash!
See what happens when Rogue One: A Star War’s Story, the tale of a group of outsiders trying to make the world a better place, meets the the classic stop-motion Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, a tale of a group of outsiders trying to desperately fit in with a world that wants nothing to do with them.
They said we were mad when we mashed up those BlizzCon figures, and that we had gone too far when we officiated the unholy matrimony of Star Wars figures and Disney princesses. Looking back on those, they were right. So, so right. But there has never been a movie franchise quite as toy-friendly as Star Wars. And no holiday has managed to capture the spirit of mass commercialization in lieu of exploring what it really means to be alive like Christmas. So it had to be done.
