If this weekend’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them didn’t quite scratch your blockbuster itch, don’t be too disappointed, because there are a ton of other big films coming out this holiday season. None of these is bigger than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a brand-new TV spot for which we’ve got in today’s Movie Morsels. Plus, director James Gunn makes a offbeat announcement regarding Guardians of the Galaxy, word on how you can see the animated anthropomorphic musical Sing for free, and much more!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

As cool as it was watching the latest Rogue One trailer online, it was much more thrilling seeing it on the big screen when it played before Doctor Strange. Two things in particular struck me about the first Star Wars film not to feature the Skywalker family (so far as we know)…

1.) The imposing sense of scale that left audiences awestruck when we first saw the original trilogy in theaters back in the ’70s and ’80s. and which I’ve found lacking in every Star Wars film since, seems to have returned. This thing actually makes the Death Star threatening again!

2.) The words of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso (about rebellions being built on hope) resonate so strongly at this time in our country’s history that I got more than a little choked up (my wife was moved to tears). Both elements are present once more in the film’s latest goosebump-inducing TV spot, which encourages fans to “save the rebellion, save the dream”…

Guardians of the Galaxy

How sure is director James Gunn that there’s an Easter egg in his original Guardians of the Galaxy that has not yet been discovered? So sure he’s given a $100,00 guarantee that such an Easter egg exists. Note: Gunn is not offering the cash to the person who finds this Easter egg—just a little something to consider before you lock yourself in your room and rewatch Guardians 50 more times…

Sing

Illumination, the animation studio behind Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets, is pretty damn proud of their critter-filled holiday songfest Sing. So they’re offering a free early screening of the film to the first two hundred fans to line up for it at select theaters this Saturday, November 26th at 10 AM. Doors open at 9 AM, so get in line early if you want to see it a month before it hits theaters on December 21st. A complete list of theaters can be found on the Sing Saturday website.

Stargate

Sorry, Stargaters. It looks like the long talked about reboot of the hit film franchise isn’t happening any time soon. In an exclusive interview with Empire, producer Dean Devlin remarks, “It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.”

Devlin adds that today’s system of big-budget franchise-focused filmmaking has made the project far more difficult than the independently produced original 1994 Stargate: “You’d have several studios involved and a lot of voices and, you know, you may make something great, but you also may have something that doesn’t resemble what you wanted to do. That kind of ‘collaboration’ is a terrifying aspect of the whole thing.”

He adds, “It’s one of the reasons I prefer to work independently. Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back.”

Fifty Shades Darker

Curious for more? That’s the big question asked in the marketing campaign for the Fifty Shades of Dark sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. The latest TV spot for the February 10th release (aw, another Valentine’s Day present) debuted during the Latin Grammy Awards; and features a Spanish-language version of singer Miguel’s single “Crazy in Love.” Check it out below.
