ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Clip Shows New X-Wing Footage, and More Movie News

Take a deep breath, people. The election season is almost over, and the holiday movie season is about to begin! So let’s kick off today’s Movie Morsels with a new TV ad for the most hotly anticipated release of that season, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with a bit of brand-new footage. We’ve also got news on who will be composing the score for Spider-Man: Homecoming, an update on the Jumanji reboot, a new music video for Moana, and more!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Ah, the Force is strong in this TV commercial, which no doubt kicks off a barrage of Rogue One ads we’ll be seeing in the months leading up to the first Star Wars spinoff film’s release on December 16th. Will fans get the same rush of triumph and heartbreak they felt with last December’s Force Awakens? And more importantly, is it just me or does Ben Mendelsohn’s Orson Krennic look an awful lot like an evil twin of Hugh Laurie in this video?!

In other Rogue One news, this weekend also saw the release of two new banners for the film, each featuring a different side of its central conflict between Rebellion and Empire…

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2

Thwip! After snagging gigs scoring Rogue One and this weekend’s hit Doctor Strange, it looks like frequent Pixar and Bad Robot composer Michael Giacchino is taking over the entire blockbuster calendar. In addition to The Incredibles 2, the Oscar winner will be scoring Spider-Man: Homecoming. Clearly, Marvel wants the best people handling all aspects of the wall-crawler’s first MCU solo film. Now we just need Giacchino to create a theme for Spidey as memorable as John Williams did for Superman and Danny Elfman did for Batman. (Elfman’s scores for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, while great, aren’t quite as iconic.)

Jumanji

Samoan Thor, a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson, took some time out from playing pranks on Kevin Hart on the jungle set of their Jumanji to share a new photo of the film’s stars, and announce that the reboot will now hit theaters in December 2017 instead of July 2017. Hey, I think it’ll be worth the wait. I mean, just look at this crew! Have you ever seen a more fun-loving foursome?!

"Right down Dwanta Claus lane.." Excited to share this great news: CHRISTMAS of 2017 comes early for our #JUMANJI SEQUEL. We were always slated to be released summer of 2017, but after months of shooting and editing our movie together, we realized we have a big family franchise on our hands, that's full of Christmas wish fulfillment, fun and heart. Like so many of us, it's my FAVORITE time of the year and I LUV delivering holiday entertainment. From MOANA this Thanksgiving, to ROCK THE TROOPS this Christmas, to JUMANJI next Christmas! Calling Rudolph now to get our sleigh and fanny packs. #JUMANJI #SonyPictures #HereComesDwantaClaus

“After months of shooting and editing our movie together,” explains the Rock, “we realized we have a big family franchise on our hands, that’s full of Christmas wish fulfillment, fun and heart.”

Moana

Is any film this year filling music nerds with as much excitement as Moana? With songs by the internet’s boyfriend Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Disney animated epic can count on every Hamilton fan from hear to Hoboken to catch it on its opening weekend. Now we’ve got the South Seas adventure’s first full-length music video, featuring Alessia Cara’s performing Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go,” which is sung by Moana herself (actress Auli’i Cravalho) in the film…

Bohemian Rhapsody

Mr. Robot - Season 2

Finally today… Whether you’re a fan of TV’s Mr. Robot, the music of Queen, or just absolutely perfect casting, you’ll be delighted to hear that Rami Malek is set to play late superstar Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, a biopic about the singer-songwriter and his legendary band. Bryan Singer is currently in talks to direct what’s sure to be one of the most talked about dramas of this decade. The film’s expected to begin shooting next year, and, to help insure authenticity, original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor are on board as executive producers.
