RIVERDALE Season 3 Teases Creepy Cult Storyline, Adds Penelope Ann Miller

As if maple syrup murderers and Black Hoods weren’t enough, it looks like Riverdale is about to get infiltrated by a creepy cult.

That’s just one of the nuggets of information teased out of San Diego Comic-Con, when the hit CW series took the stage Sunday afternoon, with most of the cast and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa in tow. A few snippets of new footage aired during the panel, with one sequence showing Betty (Lili Reinhart) eavesdropping on her mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) and sister Polly (Tiera Skovbye) as they engage in some sort of ritual with Polly’s twin babies.

Fans will remember that Polly delivered her twin–Juniper and Dagwood, which might be the creepiest baby names ever–on a mysterious “farm” last season, which sounded pretty culty. In the finale, after Hal Cooper was revealed to be the Black Hood, Polly suggested Alice get involved with the farm, and it looks like that’s exactly what’s happening here. Indeed, Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed the farm is a cult, lead by a man named Edgar Evernever, who we’ll meet in season three. Aguirre-Sacasa also let it drop that the cult was inspired by Netflix‘s true crime series, Wild, Wild Country.

The panel also dropped a bit of casting news. Penelope Ann Miller will play district attorney Ms. Wright, the prosecuting attorney in charge of Archie’s (KJ Apa) murder trial. Aguirre-Sacasa also said that Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) mom and kid sister Jelly Bean will finally show up this season, although they haven’t been cast yet. (Fingers crossed for Neve Campbell!)

We also learned that Riverdale has plans to do another musical episode, as well as a flashback episode focused on the parents.

And, while not exactly news, the best thing to come out of Hall H was the news that Kate Moss, Andrew Garfield, and Mark Hamill are all self-professed Riverdale fanatics. Stars: they’re just like us.

But really, after all is said and done, all we can think about is that cult. What’s going on, and will Alice be okay? We can’t wait to find out when Riverdale returns Wednesday, October 10.
