Rinko Kikuchi Will Return for PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING

In the original Pacific Rim, Idris Elba‘s Stacker Pentecost famously “canceled” the apocalypse alongside his adopted daughter, Mako Mori, and pilot Raleigh Beckett. And while Charlie Hunnam won’t be back as Raleigh for the upcoming sequel, Rinko Kikuchi is not only reprising her role as Mako for Pacific Rim: Uprising, she’s essentially taking Stacker’s place!

Via ScreenRant, the first synopsis for Pacific Rim: Uprising reveals that Mako has taken it upon herself to train the next generation of Jaeger pilots. That includes John Boyega‘s character, Jake Pentecost, who was previously revealed to be the son of Elba’s character from the previous movie. But if the description is accurate, there is plenty of tension between Mako and her foster brother.

There are spoilers ahead for Pacific Rim: Uprising! Stop reading now if you don’t want to know any plot details!

Here’s the short version of the story breakdown. Mako apparently pulls Jake out of the criminal underworld “when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees.” Prior to that, Mako and Jake were apparently estranged from each other in the wake of their father’s death. The description also introduces Scott Eastwood as Jake’s rival Jaeger pilot, Lambert, and Cailee Spaeny as a Jaeger hacker named Amara. It’s going to be up to that trio to follow Mako’s lead as they try to cancel the apocalypse…again.

Pacific Rim: Uprising will be released on March 23, 2018, but fans at New York Comic Con will get to see the first trailer for the film in just a few days.
