Breaking Down the RICK AND MORTY Easter Eggs In “Morty’s Mind Blowers”

Last Sunday, “Morty’s Mind Blowers” once again made us question everything we know about Rick and Morty, as the series gleefully mocked itself while taking some inspiration from The Simpsons Halloween Specials. This episode may have even surpassed “Tales From the Citadel” with meta references and more Easter Eggs than anyone can easily keep straight. That’s why today’s Nerdist News is all about the details that you may have missed in “Morty’s Mind Blowers!”

Join host and possible Dolittle, Jessica Chobot, as she runs down some of our favorite Rick and Morty moments from the past episode. We absolutely didn’t see it coming when the title duo had to move to a new reality because Morty discovered the secret agenda of all squirrels! That was almost as fun as the Sandman-like cameo at the start of the episode and the revelation of the Truth Tortoise. If you play the Tortoise’s audio backwards, it says ‘I’m a Beatle, Paul is dead.” For those of you who aren’t up on your music conspiracy theories, that’s from a rumor that the real Paul McCartney died decades ago, and he was replaced by a lookalike.

There were more subtle touches as well, like the color-coded memories that seemed a lot like Pixar’s Inside Out, and the demonic phantasms from Ghost that pulled an alien warrior down to Hell. We were also greatly amused by the callbacks to Contact, The Empire Strikes Back, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Battlestar Galactica.

Not even Rick and Morty itself was safe from this episode, as it mercilessly parodied its own production delays and further eroded the relationship between the title characters. “Morty’s Mind Blowers” also made us wonder whether Morty was right about being unable to learn from his mistakes if so many of his experiences have been removed from his mind. The fact that Rick had a contingency plan for this suggests that it isn’t the first time that Summer has had to bail them out!
