Earlier this year, Square Enix revealed that the Playstation 2 classic, Final Fantasy XII is getting a modern remaster in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. And at the Tokyo Game Show, a new trailer for The Zodiac Age was finally unveiled, offering up some of the updated visuals and gameplay, and so far, we really like what we see!
The PS2 version was great for its time, but this new iteration is definitely the facelift the game needed to be discovered by a new generation of players. The Zodiac Age is also adding the Zodiac Job System that was previously a part of the updated Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System that never made it to the U.S. for an official release. As the name implies, the Zodiac Job System lets players pick from the 12 signs of the Zodiac for specific job progression within the game.
As before, The Zodiac Age will take place in Ivalice, a fantasy realm plagued by an ongoing war between two empires. The story revolves around two lead characters: a would-be sky pirate named Vaan, and a young princess named Ashe, who forms a resistance movement against one of the warring empires after her homeland is conquered. Back in 2007, a sequel, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, was released for the Nintendo DS. But that was the last time that the world of Final Fantasy XII was explored on a western gaming console prior to the upcoming remastered edition.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will be released for Playstation 4 in 2017.
