That’s right campers, it’s almost time to return to Camp Firewood! The long awaited second installment of the 2001 cult classic (it’s a cult classic by now, right? What are the rules?) Wet Hot American Summer comes the aptly named Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.Â
Premiering exclusively on Netflix Friday, July 31 at 12:01am PT, we’ll finally see the return of our favorite camp counselors. As the name suggests, the series is a prequel, so that would put us all about 8 weeks before the events of the film. As if the entire cast returning wasn’t enough to get any Wet Hot American Summer fan excited, there are some some serious heavy hitters added to the roster this time around: Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Jason Schwartzman, Jordan Peele, Chris Pine, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Michael Cera, and Weird Al Yankovic.
In the featurette above, we get short glimpse behind the scenes of the new series, which primarily seems to be the actors’ incredulity about being another decade or so older. We also hear about the low budget aspect of the movie and how everyone actually stayed in the bunks of the camp during filming, which seems to have lent to the camp-like comradery of the cast. The biggest take away though is that everyone involved seems truly honored to be a part of something that has become so loved over the years.
Now, of course, it will be exciting to see what the new actors bring to the world of Camp Firewood but what I’m really interested in is, if the series will ultimately end at the beginning of the movie, where do all these characters go? How will David Wain explain them away? The casting info has descriptions like “mysterious figure” and “secret spy” listed, so do these characters meet their demise? By the time the movie happens, has Camp Firewood gone through an extensive cover-up? And what wisdom will the can of mixed vegetables bestow on us this time? I, for one, cannot wait to find out.
What are you looking forward to most? Let us know in the comments below, right next to the bottle of d**k cream. No! I said next to my… stick… team, you know, stick team! Stickball! Go away, leave me alone!
