The Punisher is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Daredevil season 2, and now he may have his own series to dispense his personal brand of justice on the criminal element. A new report suggests that Netflix is close to ordering a Punisher series to go along with its previously ordered Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.

Given the large spotlight that Daredevil season 2 is putting on the Punisher, a solo series seems like the natural next step. Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) is stepping into the role of Frank Castle a.k.a. the Punisher opposite Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil. The two characters have a long history of conflict in Marvel’s comic book universe, in addition to some memorable team-ups.

This isn’t the Punisher’s first brush with TV. Back in 2012, Fox was developing The Punisher as a television series in which Frank Castle worked for the police while secretly executing criminals as the Punisher. The premise made it seem more like a Dexter clone than a faithful adaptation of the character from the comic.

Dolph Lundgren was the first man to portray Frank Castle in live action form in the 1989 Punisher movie. In 2004’s The Punisher, Thomas Jane played the title character. Four years later, Ray Stevenson took over the part in Punisher: War Zone. Subsequently, the rights reverted to Marvel, which allowed the Punisher to be used in Daredevil.

While Bernthal’s Punisher won’t initially be wearing his famous skull emblem, don’t be too surprised if he eventually adopts that symbol during Daredevil season 2. This series will be the first time that the Punisher has co-existed with any other Marvel characters in live-action, which could eventually mean that the Punisher will encounter other superheroes and supervillains in the MCU. Personally, we’d love to see the Punisher go up against his very first adversary: Spider-Man!
