Report: The Legion of Super-Heroes to Appear on a DC TV Series

The Legion of Super-Heroes have been an integral part of the DC Universe since 1958, when the time-traveling super powered teens from the 30th century came back in time to recruit a young Superboy into their membership. Since then, the team has become one of DC’s longest running series, getting an animated show a few years back, and even making a brief appearance in live-action on Smallville.

Now it the Legion might be returning to TV once again. This past weekend at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns told reporters after The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow panel, “You’ll see a hint of the Legion on one of our shows. Keep watching.” He didn’t specify which of the four DC Universe shows currently on the air would feature the Legion, although I think it’s safe to guess it probably won’t be Arrow.

Arrow aside, the Legion has ties to the other three DC characters and concepts currently on the air. Supergirl was a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes for years in the comics, when the future super team came back in time to recruit her, just as it had her cousin Superman. The Flash’s descendant, the speedster known as XS, was also a member of the team, and travelled through time on several occasions to meet her Speed Force family in the past. And with Legends of Tomorrow dealing with time travel, that’s a third possibility as a likely place for the Legion to show up.

Could a Legion appearance lead to something bigger? Maybe eventually their own series? A few years ago, the notion of a TV show set in a far flung future with twenty super powered teenagers would have seemed impossible, but these days, when it comes to DC properties on TV, anything goes. About a year ago or so, rumors began to circulate that a Legion of Super-Heroes movie was in the works, but with a cast so huge, maybe TV is a better way to go. I imagine we’ll know more when details emerge about where the Legion will eventually show up on our television screens.
