Although it has been rumored for some time now, it seems we now have some semi-official confirmation that Anthony and Joe Russo, the directing duo behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, have signed on the dotted line to direct Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2, which are set for a May 2018 and 2019 release. Of course, this also hints that Avengers: Age of Ultron will indeed be Joss Whedon’s last Avengers movie, which many have already guessed, since he recently made comments about shooting the sequel being beyond brutal, and also expressing his desire to write and direct more of his own creations in the future. (This is the part where all the Firefly fans out there start getting their hopes up.)
Just a couple of years ago, the Russo Brothers were best known for directing episodes of Arrested Development and Community, so everyone was shocked when these two guys, best known for television comedies, were hired to direct the sequel to Captain America. But when they knocked it out of the park with Winter Soldier, they suddenly became Marvel Studios’ new darlings, and the action directors everyone wanted to hire. In fact, Sony recently signed the pair for a three-year, first-look deal with them. How they’ll find time to do a Sony movie on top of Civil War and two Avengers movies should prove interesting, although they might have time to squeeze one movie in between Marvel projects… Could it be producing a Ghostbusters related movie, as was recently rumored? I suspect we’ll learn a lot more about the insanely busy schedule of the two in the months to come.
