Report: Olivia Wilde & Garrett Hedlund Set to Return for Third TRON Film

The cast for the third installment of Disney’s TRON series is shaping up, rumored to be called TRON: Ascension. It looks like TRON: Legacy’s two leads, Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund, are returning to the world of the Grid as Quorra and Sam Flynn, respectively, along with the recently confirmed Joseph Kosinski, who is back on board to direct the follow up to his 2010 film. The third TRON has yet to receive a final greenlight, but sources close to the production have confirmed to us that these two actors are definitely back if the movie goes through. Sadly, it seems the best part of TRON: Legacy won’t be back, since Daft Punk, who did the original score for that movie, have confirmed that they are not returning, with rumors that Skrillex is taking their place.

Disney announced that they were developing a sequel to TRON: Legacy ever once that movie ended up grossing $400 million worldwide, and Garrett Hedlund even confirmed his return back in 2011 or so. Since that time, however, Disney purchased Lucasfilm, and getting Star Wars off the ground again seemed to be a higher priority for the company. The world of TRON got sent to the back burner. But with Star Wars now up and running again, Disney has turned their attention back to the Grid, because why have one big sci-fi franchise when you can have two?!

So just what would a third TRON even be about? No one is sure, but the rumors swirling around a few years back about the computer world of the Grid taking over the real world, which could end up being kind of cool. There were also rumors that Cillian Murphy’s character, Edward Dillinger Jr, the son of the first film’s bad guy who made an uncredited cameo in Legacy, would return for a third movie in a bigger capacity… but a lot can change in five years. If production is set to begin before the end of this year as rumored, expect for more details to start dropping very soon.
