Report: Nintendo Shutting Down Wii U Production by End of Year

The NX rumors are intensifying!

According to the typically reputable Japanese news site, Nikkei, Nintendo will be halting Wii U production later this year. However, before you get too excited about a next generation console, Nikkei does clarify that this new information doesn’t necessarily make an NX 2016 launch imminent.

The same report also mentions that Nintendo has ceased production on several Wii U accessories as well. It appears that the Wii U’s end is upon us, ladies and gents. I know there are a ton of staunch gamepad supporters out there, but this really isn’t too shocking, especially when you consider the fact that the console has barely sold over 12 million units since its 2012 launch. For comparison’s sake, the PS4 has sold well over 36 million units while out on the market for a year less than Nintendo’s current home console. By all accounts, this was a disaster for the Japanese giant. That’s not to say it’s not a great gaming machine (I have two in my home), but the Big N must face the music and move on.

Personally, I’d wager that we’ll be seeing the NX in stores by the end of the year. Everyone is still waiting on Zelda U, and having it as a launch title for the company’s next console would make the machine a must-own.

Nerdist has reached out to Nintendo for comment. We’ll update the story when more information is given.

Do you think this means we’ll be seeing the NX this year? Are you a fan of the Wii U? Are you saddened by this news? Let us know in the comments below!
