Activision is reportedly working on a Ghostbusters game for the PS4 and Xbox One, set to launch alongside the upcoming film.
According to Retail Merchandiser, different merchandise for the film has been in development for quite some time now, and that includes a “full-fledged” video game. This is not to be confused with the LEGO Ghostbusters content included in LEGO Dimensions. The report doesn’t mention whether the all-female cast will be featured in the title.
Video games based on films don’t have the best track record (see Bad Boys: Miami Takedown on the PS2), so hopefully this new venture won’t fall into that same awful cycle. A unique storyline would work best in this situation, as opposed to the mechanics in this title suffering due to developers trying to stay true to the film counterpart. That said, the female cast should definitely be feature–they’re the new faces of the franchise, after all.
There’s reason to be confident that a good game could come out of this. The Luigi’s Mansion series is basically Ghostbusters, so following that game’s formula could prove to be awesome. Even the recent LEGO Ghostbusters content was fantastic. It can work if the game stays true to the silly and fun vibe from the movies, throwing in some epic ghost catching moments. The 2009 Ghostbusters: The Video Game also received positive marks from critics and fans alike. There’s hope, folks!

The film will be debuting July 15, 2016.
