Remembering Joe Kubert

Another legend of comics passed away today: Joe Kubert died at the age of 85, and anyone with more than a passing interest in comics and comic art knows the name and his art, both from his work on Sgt. Rock, Tor, Hawkman, and many others and from his eponymous comic art school in Dover, NJ, where his also-famous comic artist sons Adam and Andy are instructors.

Kubert was active right up to the end, inking the recently-released #2 Nite Owl issue of Before Watchmen drawn by Andy (and written by J. Michael Straczynski); there’s Joe Kubert Presents on the way in October, too, projected when it was announced as the first edition in a six-issue anthology. A frequent guest at comic conventions, he was scheduled to speak at the International Animation, Comics and Caricature Festival in Tel Aviv next weekend.

RIP Joe. An astonishing, wonderful artist.

btw, Joe was a guest in Tel-Aviv last year. The 2012 iteration of the fest just ended on Saturday. I was browsing my e-mail last night and ran into an ad from a local comic shop publicizing a signing by both Joe and Adam, only to realize it was dated July, 2011.
