New READY PLAYER ONE Featurette Embraces the Past and the Future

Ready Player One author Ernest Cline absolutely loves the films of Steven Spielberg, and those feelings should be clear to anyone who has read the original novel. Spielberg also has a great deal of admiration for Cline and his book, which is why they are collaborating on the upcoming feature film adaptation of the story. In a new expanded teaser, Cline offers his thoughts about Spielberg over clips from some of the director’s most iconic movies, including Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and Raiders of the Lost Ark. From there, Spielberg speaks about Cline’s vision of the future as we get a new glimpse from the world of Ready Player One.

As relayed in the new video, Ready Player One takes place in 2045 with the world on the brink of a total economic collapse. X-Men: Apocalypse star Tye Sheridan is stepping into the role of Wade Watts, a young man who seeks shelter in the virtual paradise known as the OASIS. The clip reestablishes Wade’s reverence for the creator of the OASIS, James Halliday (Mark Rylance). Halliday has left an Easter egg within the OASIS that promises untold riches to the player who finds it. The trailer also offers a glimpse of Wade’s avatar, Parzival, as he climbs into a DeLorean as part of an impossible race. Parzival is far from the only player gunning for Halliday’s fortune, and there are still several secrets left to be discovered in the OASIS.

Ready Player One will hit theaters on March 30.
