The Trailer for BLUE PLANET II Is Extremely Soothing

How much visual and auditory goodness can possibly be jammed into a single documentary about Earth’s magnificent oceans? BBC Earth is apparently, and ever so thankfully, trying to find out as the new Blue Planet II television series will not only be narrated by Sir David Attenborough, but will also feature a song made in collaboration between Radiohead and legendary film composer Hans Zimmer. (Seriously, when does Aquaman show up?)

The above clip features a five-minute taste of what’s to be expected from the new Blue Planet II series, which is set to air on BBC One on an unspecified date later this year. The clip is called a “prequel,” although for we less-cultured ruffians here in The States, that really means preview. A preview that features the honeyed voice of Attenborough over a series of absolutely stunning shots of ocean- and beach-dwelling creatures.

Along with Attenborough’s glorious narration, the video also features a track dubbed “(ocean) bloom.” The song is a collaboration between Radiohead, the band that requires zero introduction, and Hans Zimmer, who also requires zero introduction, but let’s give him a little anyway; he’s scored over 150 films including Gladiator, The Dark Knight trilogy, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The track is a new take on Radiohead’s original song, “Bloom,” which was featured on their album, The King of Limbs.

In the below clip, Zimmer, Thom Yorke, and Jonny Greenwood discuss how they evolved “(ocean) bloom,” as well as what they hope the impact of the series will be. It’s obvious all three musicians feel strongly about preserving the immense beauty and richness of the oceans, but Yorke seems to put it best when he notes that “The fact that this TV series is coming out at this moment, I hope, rekindles our love of the oceans and our desire to understand really our relationship to them.” Yorke adds that this is “bigger than you.” Just like that whale shark in the “prequel,” did you see that thing?!
