Quentin Tarantino Has an Idea for an “Australian BONNIE AND CLYDE”

You know, for a guy who keeps contending he’s only got a couple more movies left to make, Quentin Tarantino sure does bandy about a lot of different ideas for the public. Tarantino has been saying for a while that he’s only going to make 10 movies total, maybe 11 (he’s lumping both volumes of Kill Bill into one movie, which is fair enough). Now coming off of his eighth movie—The Hateful Eight, which I truly adored—that gives him two or three more. But in various interviews he’s been saying many different things about what these movies could possibly be. Now we can add “’30s-era Australian gangster flick” to the list of potentials.

While talking to “So, Is It Any Good?” during his H8ful press tour, the two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter said one fun idea might be “an Australian film that would take place in the ’30s. It would be a Bonnie and Clyde-ish sort of story set with a couple of outlaws in Australia. We’ll see whatever happens.” That seems like it could be a pretty cool idea, and it would definitely be another time and place the influential filmmaker has yet to tackle following his trio of historical film that also include Inglourious Basterds (Nazi-occupied France in the ’40s) and Django Unchained (the American South in the 1850s).

But, this is in no way a guarantee that film number nine or 10 will be this Australian gangster movie; recently he’s also mentioned he might make Kill Bill 3 (or 2, if we’re trusting his own numbering scheme), and there’s still the Killer Crows idea that came from excised pieces of the original Basterds screenplay. There really is no telling, because maybe the idea hasn’t even stricken him yet. One of the best things about Quentin Tarantino is how he takes his time and lets ideas percolate before proceeding.
